Renya Gouto (郷登 蓮也 Gotō Ren'ya) is a 2188 Colonist in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

The Renya Gouto of 2188 was one of the 15 residents of the 2188 space colony. Although the Nenji Ogata of 2188 owned the Shikishima conglomerate, Renya Gouto took care of all corporate matters.

Story

Before the Nanomachine Infection

Renya Gouto was a CEO of Shikishima Industries before the nanomachine infection. Gouto was responsible for the acquisition of Newmen Incorporated, which was a nanomachine research company led by Chihiro Morimura. During the acquisition of Newmen Incorpated, Gouto initiated the transfer of a large backdoor slush fund, and used Morimura's interstellar development project as a front to hide his misdeeds. Unfortunately for Gouto, Morimura was so dedicated to Project Ark and Shikishima's Interstellar Development that she sold nanomachines on the black market to raise more funds. Eventually this led to nanomachines being increasingly used for memory tampering, mind-hacking, and other crimes against humanity. Because Shikishima was now one of the world's top innerlocitor/nanomachine sellers, it would soon face investigations by ethics committees and international agencies. Although Morimura was ultimately the one who gave away nanomachines for illicit purposes, the 2188 Gouto began to fear that investigations into Morimura and Newmen Incorporated would uncover his own wrongdoings. So, in order to hide his crimes for good, Gouto hired the assassin Ei Sekigahara to eliminate her. Although Ei knew the truth behind Gouto's hit on Morimura, he was more than willing to carry out the assassination with proper payment.

Shortly after Gouto hired and payed Sekigahara, the nanomachines began to spread, infect, and kill like a plague. The 2188 colony became the last safe haven for humanity, and Gouto arrived to the colony along with Ei Sekigahara as a bodyguard.

On the Colony

After escaping the nanomachine incident and boarding the 2188 colony, it can be assumed that Gouto donated his DNA for Project Ark. Although he was not a formal scientist for Project Ark, his experience with nanomachines and business as Shikishima's CEO may have helped him contribute to the colony.

Ei Sekigahara murdered Chihiro Morimura for his own personal vengeance. After her death and possibly after the energy crisis shootout, Renya Gouto discovered an Artificial Intelligence of Kengo Ogata in Morimura's administrative data. Gouto learns that Kengo Ogata was the one who supervised Morimura on Project Ark, and also the one who encouraged her to sell nanomachines on the black market. Kengo also reveals to Gouto that he made Morimura do all that in an attempt to speed along Project Ark, so she could download his AI into a Nenji Ogata clone. Gouto, as one of the last few survivors in the 2188 colony, refuses to let a newly-downloaded AI Kengo lead humanity in a Nenji Ogata's body. Sadly, it can be assumed that the 2188 Gouto's efforts were fruitless, because Project Ark had already set off by the time Gouto discovered Kengo's plan, and Gouto did not have the administrative clearance to stop it.

Death

While it is currently unknown how the 2188 Renya Gouto died, it can be inferred that he died after Chihiro Morimura and before Ryoko Shinonome and Tetsuya Ida.

The data unit with her shows Sekigahara a log between himself and the other Miura, as well as a log between himself and Renya Gouto from 2188.

Etymology

• The name Renya means "lotus, water lily" (蓮) (ren) and "to be, also" (也) (ya).
• Renya's surname Gouto means "hometown" (郷) (gou) and "ascend" (登) (to).
