Keitaro Miura: October 1944. A particularly cloudy day.
Keitaro Miura: I begin military service tomorrow. Standing by at the school.
Keitaro Miura: I was too excited and anxious to sleep last night.
Afternoon
Sakura National School: Wooden Building
1944
Keitaro Miura: Takatoshi-san.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: A brand-new schoolhouse, with all its luxuries...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: And not a single student attending.
Keitaro Miura: They need every able-bodied student at the factories.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: I know, we're in a state of emergency.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Just a shame that it's come to this, I suppose.
Consider: Takatoshi Hijiyama
Keitaro Miura: He's a year above me, but we're the same age.
Keitaro Miura: We grew up in the same town together. He was such a mess.
Keitaro Miura: Seems he's shaped up, though.
Keitaro Miura: He's found a certain dignity ever since he enlisted.
Consider: State of Emergency
Keitaro Miura: I heard a rumour from the marines at the port.
Keitaro Miura: They say we have no ships left, that it's a hopeless war...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: What's wrong, Keitaro? You resent being drafted?
Keitaro Miura: No.
Keitaro Miura: Just... of all people, why'd they choose me?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Don't let your nerves get to you again.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: You'll get to fight for your country before your peers.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: That's an honour and a privilege.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: You don't have to worry, anyway.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: One look at it, and you'll know this war is ours.
Keitaro Miura: At what, exactly?
Takatoshi Hijiyama looks around, and then steps closer to Keitaro Miura before continuing.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: I can't say too much out here, but...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: ...we have a secret weapon. Our own key to victory.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: You'll see it in the armory soon enough.
Keitaro Miura: ...But we're just students. Why do we have access to something so secret?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Because...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: We've been chosen as pilot cadets for that very weapon.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: But keep it quiet.
Takatoshi Hijiyama steps away again.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Maximum-level security. Not even your family can know.
Keitaro Miura: ...Understood.
Consider: Secret Weapon
Keitaro Miura: A secret weapon powerful enough to win the war?
Keitaro Miura: And out of all the potential pilots across Japan...
Keitaro Miura: ...They chose me.
Keitaro Miura: What can I do? Will I be any help at all?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Best of all, we can stuff our faces when we get there.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: So don't worry too much.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Secret Weapon
Keitaro Miura: So what is this new weapon?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: We've been calling it a Sentinel.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: A heavily-armored craft that requires a pilot to operate.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: It'll help us gun down the enemy at our shores.
Keitaro Miura: So the Americans really are coming for us...
Takatoshi Hijiyama turns away.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: We've been forced to abandon many of our posts overseas.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: At this rate, we'll have to end this on the mainland.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Our homeland's future is in the hands of this Sentinel.
Takatoshi Hijiyama turns back to Keitaro Miura.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: But they're good hands.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: A single Sentinel rivals aircraft carriers in terms of power.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: No... It could outmatch an entire military on its own.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Whatever they've got, we'll keep our homeland safe.
Takatoshi Hijiyama turns, looking outside.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: And one day, we'll take the fight to American soil.
Keitaro Miura: ...
A door opens, and both Keitaro Miura and Takatoshi Hijiyama turn to face it.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Hm?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: I didn't think anyone else would come here.
Keitaro Miura: I'll see who it is.
Keitaro Miura walks over, and Tamao Kurabe and Kiriko Douji walk in.
Keitaro Miura: Tamao-san.
Tamao Kurabe: So this is where you've been hiding!
Tamao Kurabe walks over to greet Takatoshi Hijiyama, and Kiriko Douji awkwardly follows behind. She looks at both Keitaro Miura and Takatoshi Hijiyama before facing away toward the outside windows.
Tamao Kurabe: Takatoshi-san!
Tamao Kurabe: Goodness, look at you! Such a gentleman now!
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Hey, Tamao-san. What brings you here?
Tamao Kurabe: I had to see Keitaro-san off.
Tamao Kurabe: And when I heard you were back, too...
Tamao Kurabe: I had to come!
Tamao Kurabe pulls out a wrapped gift.
Tamao Kurabe: I wanted to give you this.
Tamao Kurabe: I made some ohagi for you.
Tamao Kurabe: Maybe you and Takatoshi-san can share them?
Keitaro Miura takes the gift from Tamao Kurabe.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Well, I am partial to ohagi...
Tamao Kurabe: The rations don't give us that much sugar.
Tamao Kurabe: I'm afraid they won't be very sweet...
Keitaro Miura: I'm sure they'll be delicious. Thank you.
Keitaro Miura: Is this a friend of yours?[1]
Tamao Kurabe: Yes, I invited her along...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Pardon me, but...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Have we met?
Tamao Kurabe: Oh, that's Kiriko-chan. She came to us from Tokyo.
Kiriko Douji: It's fine, you really don't have to introduce me...
Tamao Kurabe: But he's asking about you, Kiriko-chan!
Kiriko Douji: ...
Kiriko Douji turns around, her face finally visible.
Kiriko Douji: I'm... Kiriko Douji, sirs.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Erm... I'm, ah...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: I am... Takatoshi Hijiyama.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Pleased to meet you...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Wait... Douji?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Any relation to Professor Heizou Douji?
Kiriko Douji: I'm his daughter. I hope that doesn't bother you...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: N-no, far from it!
Takatoshi Hijiyama: I just never imagined his daughter would be so, ah...
Consider: Professor Douji
Keitaro Miura: I've heard about Kiriko-san's father.
Keitaro Miura: They say he's a remarkable teacher.
Keitaro Miura: Though I didn't realize he was a professor.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Hey... Do you and Kiriko-san know each other?
Keitaro Miura: We do, yes.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: ...So you two are friends? Just friends, right?
Keitaro Miura: ...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Professor Douji
Keitaro Miura: Professor Douji's here?
Keitaro Miura: If he's at the armory, that can only mean—
Takatoshi Hijiyama: That's enough, Keitaro.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: His involvement with the new weapon is highly confidential.
Keitaro Miura: ...
Takatoshi Hijiyama: I-I mean—damn it!
Kiriko Douji and Tamao Kurabe laugh.
Kiriko Douji: Don't worry, we won't tell... You're pretty funny.
Tamao Kurabe: Keitaro-san, do you know where you'll be stationed?
Takatoshi Hijiyama: He'll be working alongside me.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: The armory's not too far from here.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: However, it may be some time until he's back.
Keitaro Miura: Tamao-san...
Keitaro Miura: You and the Kurabes have been nothing but kind to me.
Keitaro Miura: I can only give you my thanks, from the bottom of my heart.
Keitaro Miura: I'll have to leave my little sister with you, so...
Keitaro Miura: Please, take care of her for me.
Tamao Kurabe: Don't you worry about a thing, Keitaro-san.
Tamao Kurabe: I'll take good care of Chihiro-chan.
Keitaro Miura: And tell her I won't be gone for long.
Keitaro Miura: The second I get time off, I'll come visit.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: Keitaro, it's almost time. They're expecting us.
Takatoshi Hijiyama: We'd better get going.
Keitaro Miura: I'll be back.
Tamao Kurabe: Do take care, you two.
They start to leave, and Keitaro Miura pauses, turning back for just a moment.
Keitaro Miura: I promise... I'll be back.

Notes

  1. In Japanese, Miura is just asking if Tamao and Kiriko came here together. This line in English makes it sound as though he doesn't know Kiriko, even though his next lines indicate that he does.
